HUMAN GENETICS/EPIGENETICS
GENETICS:
Genetics are the codes we carry with us through life, all the way back to the division of the first fertilised cell. Our cells carry within them a complete set of codes for, who we are genetically.
These codes are packed into our DNA, which are very long molecules, carrying instructions for amino acids to produce protein. When certain proteins are produced, this is the way our DNA express themselves.
EPIGENETICS:
This is also something, we carry with us right from the beginning.
A lot of it is hereditary, like tendencies to use our potential in certain ways.
EPIGENETICS influence how our GENETICS work, function and express themselves.
EPIGENETICS are modulators, and have a huge influence on the way our life is actually lived, since they can make our DNA turn ON/OFF the production of protein, thereby enhancing, or inhibiting, certain behaviours.
This human, biological chemistry is manifest in three ways:
a) DNA Methylation; makes a cell "read" or "not-read" a certain impulse
b) HISTONE modification; determines the tightness of the DNA string, thereby expanding, or inhibiting, the access of DNA Methylation
c) Non-Coding RNA; breaks down Coding RNA, rendering it ineffective
Since EPIGENETICS is the biological chemistry of how the DNA in our genes express themselves, and since we know the brain has the highest proportion of DNA in the body, we need to look for ways to enhance our EPIGENETICS to make our GENETICS work for us and not against us.
Whatever we can do as far as avoiding certain aspects, and adding others, will serve us well in the long term strategy for a better life.
This is practical neuroscience.
Pay attention!
Stay away from:
Tobacco, Alcohol, Drugs, Stress, Night Shifts and Environmental Pollutants, as much as possible.
Add to your life:
A Plant-Based, natural diet, preferably home grown
A balanced and somewhat regulated Life Style
A positive mindset
Contemplative practises
Aerobic exercise: Yoga , fast walking, light jogging, swimming
Sound and deep sleep
INTERMITTENT FASTING and EPIGENETICS.
Giving the body time to regenerate, and not have to metabolite food, is now proven to actually work.
During the fasting period, the enzyme TELOMERASE increases , which leads to an extension in the TELOMERE sequences at the ends of our DNA, protecting them from erosion and damage.
Healthy DNA makes the work for our EPIGENETICS more effective in modifying the way our DNA express themselves, and as such it improves our EPIGENETIC AGE and EPIGENETIC PLASTICITY.
EPIGENETICS in the brain has a lot of positive effects which we all want to see developed/increased:
It supports adult Neurogenesis (the science of the development of the adult brain)
Modulates Neural Behaviour (changes we aim for)
Enhances Neural Synaptic Plasticity (how adaptable the brain is)
Improves Cognition (necessary for analysis and thinking)
Enhances Memory (we can all use more of that capacity)
How well we take care of our precious human life, how much true care and consideration we have for creating a sound basis, will be the potential we need to build in developing and training our mind, and better our life!
If we are sloppy and inconsiderate towards ourselves as far as diet, life style, exercise, mindset, sleep is concerned, we make the work of our EPIGENETICS too much of an uphill battle.
We must be kind to ourselves and make sure, we nurture our EPIGENETICS and give them the best possible conditions to do the work, they can do for us, through our entire life.
